I wondered if this would come up with the repeated mention of being for or against using religious iconography on doll clothes, but I guess someone needs to mention something important about human culture and the nature of symbolism.

The reason crosses on things is problematic is because ultimately they will always represent an affiliation to Christianity. The nature of symbols is that they are inherently symbolic and thus they communicate to people a relationship to the belief or group which the symbol has been known to represent.

Because of history and the many complications of colonialism, Puritanism, and bigotry, I personally view symbols of Christianity (the cross, the crucifix, Jesus, etc) as akin to hate symbols, and therefore those who brandish them are unsafe and unwelcome to me. Obviously, other people feel the opposite and see Christianity as a beacon of love and faith and therefore the symbols make them feel safe and those who brandish them are felt to be friends or community. Ultimately, the lesson is the same. The cross communicates an affiliation to that particular religion, and to say that it can exist neutrally is frankly ignorant and naive, but it happens a lot actually because Christianity is so deeply ingrained in human culture that most languages heavily incorporate direct references to capital G God as colloquialisms, and because of colonialism and missionaries, and evangelicalism, there is nearly no part of the entire globe which has not in some way been touched or influenced by Christianity (or at the very least, Abrahamic religion). This creates a sense of easy assimilation that has existed for hundreds of years which makes us complacent to the oppressive thumb of Christianity, making us blind to its influence and heavy presence in everything we do, see, and consume.

So allow me to make an extreme example which will be easier to separate from the normality of Christian and Abrahamic iconography:

If someone started selling doll clothes (think gothic Lolita) but instead of crosses as decorations, they included sw*stikas, but the creator proclaimed that they “just think they’re pretty” or that they “believe in the original representation of peace, unity, and fertility” and are therefore unaffiliated with n*zis and believe the symbol to be neutral. Would this bother you?

I don’t think any reasonable person would say that it wouldn’t. Some may say that that person can do as they please, but ultimately the only people who would buy the clothes would be people who are entirely ignorant and naive to the implication, or people who directly identify with n*zis as no non-bigoted person would ever want to accidentally or negligently indicate to others that they hate Jewish people, poc, the disabled, or lgbtq+ people, or any other people that have been victimized by the people who have proudly brandished that symbol and gave it the infamy it has today.

It’s a outlandish example for sure because most people believe the n*zis were/are bad, and the majority of the world still feels some favor for Christianity as Christians are a lot of the time in the majority, but ultimately, the message is the same.

Like the sw*stika denotes n*zism, wearing a cross tells other people that you approve of Christianity (whether that is a good or bad thing in your opinion is entirely up to you) and similarly wearing a cross upside down tells people that you disapprove of it or even are affiliated with Satanism or some kind of anti-Christian faith and would therefore cause discomfort in people who believe in or hold dear God and Jesus. Trying to say that symbols hold no weight or meaning would, in essence, dismantle the fundamentality of language and culture in relation to humanity as every language and translation between languages began with an image which became representative of an idea or thing.

Sure it’s a lot to read into a metal charm, but I think it’s important to always question why we do something as human beings. Why is one symbol, beloved by a group that unfairly victimized a minority people (the sw*stika), seen as terrible and far too heavy to be used so carelessly or neutrally, but another symbol, also beloved by a group that has been known historically to unfairly victimize several different minority peoples and cultures (the cross), is comfortably used in neutrality because it “looks nice” and its “not that deep”? It’s mostly food for thought, but I think in this day and age we should not so blindly submit to these forces for the sake of complacency, neutrality, and conformity without asking ourselves “Why would I wear this symbol if I don’t agree with what it represents?” Especially in an age where people are educating themselves about brands which use child slave labor and actively pollute the world for profit, and then also trying to warn people off of wearing their logos or publicly displaying their use of that company’s products to limit the control those companies have on our day-to-day lives.

Chapter Seven: Options

"Something's wrong?" Bruce asked.

Bruce sat outside, waiting for Jason to return. Cassandra sat with him and waited quietly for Bruce to explain what happened. "Do you think he's afraid of me?" Bruce asked.

"Probably," Cassandra answered. Bruce chuckled. She was probably right. Maybe Bruce held onto Jason too tight and frightened him, but if he didn't hold on, he feared he wouldn't be able to protect Jason. "Are you going to make him go back to the hospital?"

Bruce looked at her and raised his eyebrows. "You want him to stay?" Bruce asked.

"Well, yeah, I guess... Is he gonna stay?" Cassandra asked.

"That's up to him, but I hope so," Bruce whispered. Dick pulled into the driveway, and Bruce restrained himself. Cassandra noticed the change in Bruce's body language, and she flicked him on his nose. "Ow!"

"Relax," Cassandra whispered. Jason stood outside the car, waiting for Bruce to smile. Bruce and Cassandra waved at him. "See you in the gym later?"

Bruce nodded, and when Jason finally made his way over, he stood face-to-face with Bruce. "I was worried about you," Bruce whispered, his voice gentle and sincere as Jason embraced him.

"Sorry," Jason mumbled.

"Whatever it was, we can fix it. It's going to be alright," Bruce whispered. Jason didn't want to let go, and Bruce didn't make him. "I want to talk to you about your options today. Okay?"

Jason nodded and let go of Bruce. "Dad?" Jason asked. "No lies?"

Bruce nodded and rested a hand on Jason's shoulder. "No lies," Bruce whispered. Jason looked back for Dick, who sat in the car on his phone. Bruce led him back inside, and they went up to Bruce's office. Jason sat down in the chair across from Bruce's. "Nuh-uh, you can sit in the big chair. I want to hear your voice."

Jason nodded and sat in Bruce's chair. For the first time in his life, he didn't feel small. Jason looked at the chair and at himself. He couldn't remember much, but he knew that he used to be much smaller. Bruce described treatments that could help Jason with his memory.

"You're gonna be eighteen soon—." Jason sank down in the seat. Hearing his age made him uncomfortable because he didn't feel that old.

Jason groaned. "Umm, old," Jason whispered.

"I get that... You were only fifteen when you—. But that time isn't gone for you yet. You're still young," Bruce reassured him, "And you don't have to go anywhere. I love you, and I want you to feel safe."

Jason relaxed his shoulders. "Jason, listen, this is a confusing situation, but you don't have to do this alone. I don't want you to do this alone," Bruce comforted.

"Thanks, Dad," Jason whispered.

Bruce smiled at him before tapping his fingers on the desk. "Jason... Are you afraid of me?" Bruce questioned. Jason chewed his lip. "It's okay... We can work on that." Jason's stomach growled, and they both laughed. "Sounds like right now, we need to work on breakfast." Jason grinned and followed Bruce to the kitchen.

Alfred gave Jason a nod as if he knew something that Bruce didn't, and he pulled a plate of food out of the oven. "Your favorite as I remember it, Master Jason," Alfred whispered. Jason thanked Alfred and dug in immediately. Tim entered the kitchen and froze as he and Jason's eyes met.

"Yikes... This is awkward," Tim mumbled to himself, "I'm never gonna get a re-do for this, and I'm still talking to myself... Nice."

Jason didn't stop eating, but he reached out to shake Tim's hand. He swallowed his last bite before introducing himself. "Jason." He didn't smile. Jason was far too curious about the situation to smile.

"Tim Drake. It's nice to finally meet you," Tim smiled.

Jason furrowed his brows. "Why?" Jason questioned. He wasn't trying to give Tim a hard time. Jason just wanted to know why Tim meeting him would be such a big deal.

"Well, because I had so many questions to ask you, but you weren't here to answer them, and now you—. You used to be Robin," Tim explained in short. Jason's jaw relaxed, and he nodded. "So, you remember that?"

Jason gestured to indicate that he barely remembered. Bruce tensed up, but he allowed them to talk to one another. "You Robin too?" Jason asked. Tim nodded hesitantly, only to be surprised by Jason's embrace. Jason wanted to say they were like brothers, but he couldn't get the word out. Tim was just relieved that Jason was okay with being replaced. Bruce beamed. It was a relief to see how well Jason got along with everyone. Bruce worried that Jason would have a hard time adjusting to new people.

At that moment, something occurred to Bruce, but he decided to stay silent. It was better to see how things worked out before moving further. Besides, it was nice to see Jason relax. Dick came in from outside, and he looked at everyone. "Good," Dick whispered.

Jason poured himself a glass of milk, and he offered Tim something to drink. Tim shook his head. "Thanks, though," Tim replied.

Chronic pain Soundwave? 👀

i like the idea that either he was made with subpar materials (like sg soundwave), or, and this is more projection, got injured and didnt treat it properly. so now he has chronic pain in his back struts. like real bad, sometimes cant walk pain. and normally he tries to just power through it, but some days he accepts his cassettes pushing him back into bed and works remotely. megatron knows its a bad pain day when he sees the twins running down the halls balancing energon cubes as big as their bodies, or when ravage arrives to take a report of the bridge, or laserbeak sits on the back of soundwave's chair at a meeting to silently record. i think soundwave feels a lot of guilt over taking these days to rest, but he eventually comes to believe it when he's told that his usefulness to the decepticon cause does not hinge on his physical ability. (and he accepts too, in private, when megatron quietly says that soundwave is important to him independent of any usefulness at all.)

i like to project this on sw because like me, i think he'd be the type to hide an injury because it "isnt that bad" and he doesn't want the medics to waste time on him. he has other things to be doing. he's needed. he's strong. he doesn't need treatment.

i also project on him because his job as communications officer does not hinge on him being able to go out in the field himself, but he is still considered vitally important to the decepticon cause... and i dunno, as a disabled person who cant work a lot of "normal" jobs due to physical limitations, its really nice to see someone be considered priceless and invaluable in a military situation without their physical ability being a part of that evaluation at all. soundwave is still important and needed whether he can walk or not. that soothes something deep down inside of me that wants to be needed.

Still the same if not even more negative and angry than before. Would you like me to restate how hurt I am as a disabled woman who couldn't "girl boss" her way out of being hunted down by her birth father? For real, I'm serious here. Cause when I post that, people pearl clutch and call me a racist instead of trying to understand why people are not really cool with this type of retelling. But I can also tell you some amazing alternative Snow White things to look at instead of seeing this dumpster fire! Not Quite Snow White is a beautiful picture book you should totally read to your kids or go check out of the library if you enjoy picture books. Mirror Mirror is great if you can get past Armie Hammer. Snow White: The Fairest of Them All, a crappy Hallmark movie? Super fun if you can find a copy and I love how they do the dwarfs here. One of my favorite naming things to do the Monday's Child rhyme. LOVE IT. So my bias is here. Fairytales for Every Child has a GREAT episode and people should not stop referring to it. A Smoky Mountain Christmas is Dolly Parton and it does the orphan angle instead of actual dwarfs. Doesn't take itself too seriously with a few callbacks to the Disney 1937 discreetly. Very discreetly. Honestly.... there's been more GOOD adaptations than there are bad ones. That's why it's so upsetting. I have countless good ones to look at. There are so many adaptations where Snow White can hunt and fight and yet none of them are, in interviews or asides, mocking previous versions or women in general. None of them go "this is not your grandma's Snow White" or in that realm. It's just trying to be a version of Snow White. That's where this failure is. When you do things like that, you're mocking women. A group of them. Be it a generation or just those who could not physically attain that standard. And that is why SW 2025 is garbage. Had it truly been made with love, then it would be acceptable. But it was not. Not towards women. Not towards the disability community. Intersectional feminism or nothing. Now bracing myself for the hate messages from RZ's fanbase who believe she does nothing wrong for the bare minimal.

Regarding the topic of Sign Language in star wars universe.

I unfortunately don't really sign, but I relied on hearing aids and lipreading quite heavily but not perfectly well. It's something I lacked in life for communication and projecting my disability onto OCs for this verse.

Again, this is my personal headcanons for my legacy and everything here are strictly fictional asdfghjkl.

The point is, I know it is common to rely on ASL and BSL as the base concept to use for deaf and mute characters to sign. Personally for me when it comes to deaf characters in my legacy verse, namely Ania and Jazz who are hearing impaired, there are more than two Sign Languages to range from within the galaxy's regions. I find that using ASL and BSL in star wars really awkward because you'll be asking 'where's american/british comes from in star wars???'. I won't be using that for a specific reason.

Ania and Jazz both have hearing aids and implants to help them, but Kritanta and Vowrawn made sure to teach the twins on sign languages under circumstances.

The first one being the Galactic Sign Language, shortened as GSL, which was formerly known as Republic Sign Language but the Senate elected to change it to Galactic for universal purpose. This can be roughly connected with Basic speaking language being mostly common. GSL is the SW equivalent to ASL (american sign language).

Tau Idair in this legacy was fluent in GSL due to one of her parents being deaf. Tau communicated Jazz in GSL within crowded places when she struggled to hear (and hearing aids can pick up a lot of noise frequencies at once, which can be distressing to deal with).

Secondly, with the resurface of the Sith Empire's existence, there is an Imperial Sign Language, shortened as ISL, as opposed to "Republic" Sign Language. It is the main sign language within Imperial core worlds. It is mostly common among Agents and Soldiers to communicate with each others for covert missions or radio silence. ISL is the SW equivalent to BSL (british sign language).

Kritanta and Vowrawn are fluent in ISL due to their daughters being hearing impaired when they found out they were born profound deaf. However, neither of them shy away from learning GSL. Not to mention that Kritanta wore a mask 24/7 for health reasons that hid away the ability for his daughters or anyone else to lipread.

Marr and Jadus were fluent in the knowledge of ISL and GSL the same reason for wearing a mask and communicate with hard of hearing officers. But generally this applies to masked characters who can take up the options of learning basic knowledge. As Ania relied on lipreading the most, Marr and Jadus didn't wait to linger long so they can take their mask off in private to communicate with her.

Thirdly, much like ISL but there's another one used within Imperial core worlds known as Sith Sign Language, shortened as SSL, commonly used amongst Siths or force-users to communicate and possibly talk shit and gossip behind non-force user's backs.

An idea brought to you by darthvronton that I'm including it in this legacy. It is possible that SSL borrows sign words from ISL purposely. a suggestion to take note brought by a friend.

Fourth, not all neutral core worlds like Tatooine or Nar Shadda followed GSL. The Hutts introduced and spread the influence of Huttese Sign Language, shortened as HSL, across neutral aligned factions. This was to go on par with characters speaking Huttese.

Especially the likes of Blizz who may have known HSL because they do communicate for trading. As part of the deal with the Jedi and Republic to keep out of trouble rather than going to jail, Blizz agreed to be an interpreter for the deaf Jedi… which they eventually became Jazz's main interpreter.

Lastly, the fifth being exclusive only to Mandalorians as they invented and translated their language into Mando'a Sign Language, shortened as MSL, for deaf and mute mandalorians without feeling the need to remove the helmet out of privacy.

All in all, I had to avoid using Basic Sign Language for universal use because when you shortened it as BSL, it can get mistaken for British Sign Language. This is why Galactic was a more appropriate choice.

I don’t know how to be normal about the fact that there seems to be more disabled people practicing long-term sex work survivalism than any other demographic. I'm also perpetually annoyed by the fact that able bodied assholes think disabled people need to perpetually be virgins with no spicy sex lives. I'm here to help fuck with that. For real, your take on Mando season 3 is completely on point. But I get not feeling able to say it out loud without a disclaimer before, after, and in the tags to keep from getting shouted at in the reblogs. It's just the messed up nature of being in the SW fandom on Tumblr. Speaking your mind on your own blog is an invitation for buffoonery.

If I were completely honestly, I'm not in the least shocked that's what we got. I've long held the opinion that the worst part about the fandom is the fan opinions and expectations out of a new series, and the expectation that a formula for a show won't change, or that a character will maintain one set mentality/trope while simultaneously offering new, completely different story arcs. It isn't necessarily impossible to pull off, but it takes very careful planning and execution. And, unfortunately, that has never been a strength in this franchise, even before Disney ownership.

For most shows, it's the season 5 slump. After 5 seasons, all the flavor is gone and any additional seasons are painfully rehashed at best. For all the corporate financial squeezing that's been done to Mando since the beginning of the show to wring out revenue like its a wet washcloth, it really tracks that were in this place after only 3 seasons.

IMO the only thing that's going to save Andor is the fact that the end of the story has already been told in Rogue One and its confirmed that season 2 will end at that point of the timeline. If it was going to be a 3+ season show, I suspect we'd see the same treatment.

Anyway, I'll stop flapping my gums in your ask box. Your hot take encapsulated what felt off about this season to me. I couldn't put words to it, but it just felt....meh.

I just disable reblogs and try not to tag it in an inflammatory way, my gripes are genuinely like. basic semiotics and story sense, I'm not going after anyone's childhood or feel-goodness. This is all me-problems and me-expectations with a massive machine of commerce that will never give a shit lmao

I too wrote a couple of posts back in s2 days expecting something of this sort going forward after the weirdly presumptuous cameo-baiting of s2 and whatever in the goddamn hell boba fett did with its mando tie-ins, but an entire season of tirespinning sure was a surprising choice. I think writing for TV is fundamentally different than writing for film, so I didn't really see a clear parallel of incompetence within the franchise; and especially with season 1 being so solid in balancing both the overarching and the episodic stuff I felt like they had a neat ramp to milk a decently long character piece out of.

But I can't help but feel like my main problem with the disney/abrams/filoni/favreau era of star wars is its irrationally strong love for the aesthetic. it blinds them to good choices that will then make for interesting stories. gently deradicalizing, humanizing, and then literally AND figuratively getting din out of his shell so he could open up to a child's love could be such an effective, simple to parse, and wholesome core to structure the series around, but that would upend the aesthetic of their cowboy-ass romp a bit too fast and have an end and an identity and all that non-marketing friendly stuff. so they keep withholding his psyche, they keep giving then taking clear communication tools away from grogu, they keep teasing their bond but never outright stating it (I cannot believe after 3 seasons he still hasn't just looked at the baby and directly confessed he loved him), so they can keep bumping those goalposts back and forth while pretending it's progress. because they are in love with the aesthetic.

again, this is my main problem, I don't see this as a problem writ large or even something that represents a wrong way to do star wars. who the hell even knows how you treat a franchise that large at this point, what importance you assign to aesthetic vs. story, all that jazz. I don't know. they're the ones with the analytics data, so they definitely know better. and maybe that's the saddest part

UNPOPULAR OPINION BELOW

TLDR: TBB writers have actively worked on numerous issues fans have raised, but said fans don't appear to be giving them any credit for it.

I don't think people on this website give TBB writers enough credit, truly. Granted, they are already at a disadvantage by being a tiny part of a large corporation that has NEVER been known to make significant efforts in removing harmful stereotypes involving race, gender, or sexuality from their content. The exception is, of course, when performing 'activism' = profit. (DISNEY is an evil corporation and if you are going to boycott one measly SW show, you might as well boycott them all).

Taking that aside, TBB writers have consistently listened to their viewers and their VALID concerns, which is clear in the writing and animation of Season 2. Now, we've all heard of the movement to un-white wash the bad batch. From the start of Season 1, viewers have been speaking out about how the models for the clones in TBB, who were deemed 'genetically superior,' looked far lighter than their original actor, Temuera Morrison. The writers and animators directly responded to these claims, and have appeared to have taken action to re-visit their animation choices in season 2. The colors for TBB, as well as Omega, have better represented Temuera Morrison and PI's range of skin tones in this past season. Some may disagree with me on that, but just looking at side by side comparisons of the skin tones in season 2 compared with Tem's in TBOBF, I'd say they did a pretty good job.

Another major grievance fans had with TBB season 1 was the continuous placement of POC into villainous, stereotypical roles. To my knowledge, season 2 villains were nearly unanimously white. Additionally, POC were placed in more positive positions , such as Phee, a black woman who was characterized as a community-driven leader. Additionally, she was voiced by Wanda Skyes, a black woman and activist. Putting people of color into roles that actually represent them is so important, and was a choice that didn't necessarily have to be made.

There were many complaints about ableism in Season 1 of the bad batch. Echo was picked on and comments were made about his prosthetics and disabilities. While I personally found these complaints a little silly, I understand that fans were upset about them. This season featured Echo taking on a much stronger role, in which his disabilities were a strength that he maintained autonomy over, eventually deciding to leave the batch despite his traumas about his experimentation. Additionally, Tech, who is autistic-coded, had wonderful dialogue that provided great representation for neurodivergent people. The scene in which he spoke to Omega about his brain not 'working' or 'processing' like other peoples was particularly refreshing to see on TV.

Overall, I think it's clear that TBB showrunners, writers, and animators have listened to fandom complaints, and have made active efforts to ammeliorate them in season 2. They appear to be invested in putting on a show that people want to see, and that minorities feel represented in.

Are there other things that could probably be adjusted in TBB to better represent minority communities? Of course! Do we live in a world where that is the standard? NOT AT ALL! If we did, this wouldn't be an issue! But unfortunately, in this day and age, racism, sexism, homophobia, etc., STILL EXIST and PERSIST. It takes active diligence to unlearn and reverse harmful stereotypes, and one of the first places they are going to show up in is media. I think the bad batch team has at least listened to fans and responded accordingly.

I truly believe that the writers and animators of the Clone Wars and the Bad Batch genuinely enjoy their careers. Not only that, but interacting with fans has consistently been a defining feature of their production group. Their team has had the most outreach to fans of any other show or group in Disney's new Star Wars, since many of the team that makes TBB were leftover from when TCW when Lucasfilm was sold. Tumblr is an echo chamber. While you may think your voices have been loud, there is just no way that individuals voicing their dissent with the series were numerous enough to provide a serious threat to viewership . I believe that the showrunners made the aforementioned changes because they genuinely DO care about the issues that these fans have brought up. NOT because they were scared into making them for profit reasons. THAT is what really matters. There are so many examples of shows, both produced by Disney and from other multi-billion dollar companies, that simply do. not. care. about these types of issues, or about how fans feel watching their shows.

Ultimately, I think the vitriol directed at the Bad Batch showrunners is misplaced. At the end of the day, it is the NORM of Disney and their content to put out lackluster shows that make little to no effort in providing representation, and often default to tired plot-lines and stereotypes that harm underrepresented communities. I'm not really sure what TBB team could've done differently to better address viewer complaints regarding representation and stereotypical portrayals of minorities. Nearly every concern that I have been able to find has been addressed.

I know many may disagree with what I've said here, and I'm cool with that. This concIusion is certainly not popular opinion, at least not from what I've seen on my dash, and mostly I wanted to put out an alternate take on points previously raised. I am unashamed to say I love Disney's Star Wars, and specifically, how the bad batch has handled season 2.
